Amani Smith Obituary – The teenager who was shot and killed in the Latonia neighborhood of Covington on Tuesday has been identified by the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office as Amani Smith, a 14-year-old. The incident occurred at around 3:30 p.m. when officers responded to a report of a shooting with multiple victims on Decoursey Avenue, near 39th Street.
Two individuals, both 14 years old, were shot and transported to the hospital. Unfortunately, Smith was pronounced dead at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, while the other victim, a girl, is in stable condition. The identity of the girl has not been disclosed publicly. Currently, the police have not identified any suspects and have assured that there is no danger to the public.
In response to the shooting, Latonia Elementary School officials followed the advice of Covington police and implemented a shelter-in-place protocol at around 3:34 p.m. Students in the after-school program remained at the school until the situation was deemed secure. Superintendent Alvin J. Garrison of Covington Independent Public Schools released a statement expressing condolences and acknowledging that the deceased teenager was a student in the district.
The statement also emphasized the importance of providing support to students who may be affected by the tragedy and encouraged open communication with the school’s counseling team. A friend of the victim, Xander Faeh, expressed disbelief and stated that the victim did not deserve such a fate.
