Darrell Benner, Death – A 57-year-old man was killed during an armed robbery and carjacking early Friday morning in the Canton neighborhood of Baltimore. According to police, around 12:30 a.m., officers responded to the 1000 block of South Curley Street for a reported shooting. They found a 57-year-old man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Medics arrived at the scene, and the victim was pronounced dead. The victim has been identified as Darrell Benner of Baltimore.
Benner’s family said they are shocked and sad. They said it all happened while he was doing his nephew, Jeffrey, a favor, moving his red Dodge Charger. “He asked Darrell to move his car, it’s like 12:30 a.m. last night, and when Darrell went to move the car, three guys approached him and Jeffrey and they had a gun to his head, and I guess Darrell tried to intervene and they shot him,” relative Chuck Magruder said.
Police said after an investigation, it was determined that a 29-year-old relative of the victim was on South Curley Street when he was approached by three unidentified Black male suspects who were armed, and the 29-year-old was robbed. During the robbery, Benner gave chase to the suspects.
The press release from police indicated that Benner retrieved a gun from his home before going after the suspects. Family members disputed that claim, saying Benner did not have a gun. According to police, as the suspects fled the location with the 29-year-old’s property as well as his red Dodge Charger (MD tag #3FL1240) they opened fire, fatally striking Benner.
