David Vanderhamm Death – The man who died in a Cedar Rapids officer-involved shooting over the weekend has been identified as 40-year-old David Vanderhamm. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation provided an update today, stating that an autopsy has been conducted, but the findings are not yet available for public release. Police were called to the scene on 31st St. NE after Vanderhamm reportedly requested their presence.
Another individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, also called for a welfare check at the same residence, alleging that Vanderhamm was armed and had made threats of self-harm and harm to others. According to the initial report, law enforcement instructed Vanderhamm to drop his weapon several times in an alley behind the house.
When he allegedly pointed the weapon at the officers, they opened fire. Vanderhamm was pronounced dead at the scene, and the unidentified bystander was also injured by gunfire. The condition of the bystander remains unknown. Three officers involved in the incident have been put on immediate critical incident leave. Following the completion of the investigation, a report will be submitted to the Linn County Attorney for further examination.
