Ebony Johnson Death – Three people are dead following a crash on Milwaukee’s north side Friday morning, Nov. 3. It happened near Florist and Sherman around 2:15 a.m. Police say a Toyota traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on Florist Avenue disregarded the red flashing traffic light and collided with a white Nissan that was traveling south on Sherman Boulevard. The impact of the collision caused the Nissan to strike a tree.
The driver of the Toyota, a 23-year-old man, fled the scene on foot. He was later arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment of non-fatal injuries. The driver of the Nissan was ejected from the vehicle. She was taken to the hospital for life-threatening injuries and later died. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office identified her as 28-year-old Ebony Johnson.
Two passengers in the Nissan died from their injuries on the scene. They were identified by the medical examiner as 28-year-old Bobbie Dyson and 31-year-old Lashonda Jackson. “I was in bed. My bedroom is right there,” said David Cooper, who lives nearby. Cooper said he was sleeping when he first heard brakes screeching – and then a sudden slam.
“Jumped up, because I thought somebody hit my house,” Cooper said. It was a car that crashed into the tree in Cooper’s front yard. “I think it was like three persons. I called the police. And that’s when people started coming up,” Cooper said.
A 2022 Milwaukee Public Works Department report shows the number of traffic-related deaths involving drivers, bikers and pedestrians skyrocketed since 2013. In 2013, 32 people died. In 2021, nearly 90 people died.
Charges are pending review by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office.
