Following Oviedo’s death, the Hamilton police announced the arrest of a suspect named Fermin Garcia-Gutierrez, aged 46, two days later. Jail records indicate that Garcia-Gutierrez is facing charges of aggravated murder and other offenses. This individual was the focus of a press conference held by Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones on March 29. Sheriff Jones revealed that Garcia-Gutierrez is currently detained on an ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) holder. Furthermore, the sheriff disclosed that Garcia-Gutierrez has been deported seven times and has been incarcerated in their jail 11 times under seven different aliases and three different dates of birth.
During the discussion of Garcia-Gutierrez’s case, Sheriff Jones expressed concerns regarding illegal immigrants and border security. He mentioned that their jail has housed nearly 1,000 “illegal aliens” facing state charges since July 2021. In response to the sheriff’s concerns, the Ohio Immigration Alliance stated that studies conducted by reputable institutions consistently show that immigrants commit crimes at a significantly lower rate than individuals born in the United States. They emphasized that this finding is not based on advocacy groups like the Center for Immigration Studies.
The Hamilton police have confirmed that they are not actively seeking any additional suspects in relation to Oviedo’s death.
