Hernan Leiva Obituary – Bazn Berhe, a 25-year-old man, has been sentenced to 100 years in prison, with 30 years suspended, for the murder of his co-worker at a Virginia Target store. The sentence was announced by the Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney on Tuesday. Berhe was found guilty of first-degree murder for planning and carrying out the killing of his coworker, Hernan Leiva, in the store’s parking lot in 2021. The motive behind the murder was Berhe’s anger over Leiva stealing his lunch from the office refrigerator.
Berhe had purchased a hammer and two knives in preparation for the murder and admitted to training for it. On the day of the incident, Berhe waited for Leiva in the employee parking lot and attacked him, stabbing and bludgeoning him to death. Berhe was arrested and later confessed to the crime. During his sentencing hearing, prosecutors revealed that Berhe had threatened to harm others if he didn’t receive the harshest possible sentence. Berhe described his actions as a “fit of rage.” The Commonwealth’s Attorney emphasized the impact of the senseless act of violence on Leiva’s family and the community, stating that the lengthy sentence was necessary to ensure public safety due to the ongoing danger posed by the defendant.
