Julia Sutton Obituary – Julia Sutton, a 56-year-old woman from Weehawken, has been identified as the victim of a hit-and-run incident on Rt. 35 in Brick on Jan. 13. The alleged perpetrator is Mark Carey Jr., a 19-year-old teenager from South Amboy. He is accused of striking Sutton with his 1999 Ford Explorer at approximately 9 a.m. on that Saturday morning before fleeing the scene.
According to Ocean County Prosecutor Brad Billhimer, the fatal car accident occurred on Rt. 35 south near Bay Boulevard in Brick Township. Sutton was tragically struck and killed while she was on the shoulder of the busy highway. The reasons for her presence on the shoulder remain unclear.
After the incident, Sutton was transported to Ocean University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Meanwhile, the car involved in the hit-and-run was identified as a 1999 Ford Explorer registered to Carey. He was apprehended the following day, Sunday, at his parents’ residence in South Amboy. Carey now faces charges of knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in another person’s death, as well as failing to report an accident, reckless driving, careless driving, and failure to maintain lane of travel.
Sutton was a well-respected health and wellness entrepreneur, known for co-founding Exhale, a wellbeing brand based in New York City. Her biography on the Boutique Fitness Solutions website reveals that she served as the chief growth officer for Vitruvia. Additionally, she had completed the OPM program at Harvard Business School and was an active member of various professional networks and organizations.
As of now, Carey remains in custody at the Ocean County Jail in Toms River, awaiting a detention hearing.
