Katie Richards Hope – The Mayville State University community is mourning the death of a beloved staff who passed away in a deadly car accident early Thursday morning. Katie Richards who was the Director of Student Success and Disability Support Services at Mayville State University and a University of North Dakota’s Athletic Hall of Famer died in the vehicle crash that happened at the early hours of this morning in Reynold.
The Hope, N.D. woman was pronounced dead after her car which was headed southbound on 22nd Avenue NE about eight miles west of Reynolds in Traill County suddenly veered off the road and somersaulted multiple times. Law enforcement agencies were called to the scene at approximately 12:10 A.M., Nov. 2, 2023, for a report of a crashed vehicle. Katie was confirmed deceased at the scene of the incident.
According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Katie was the only individual inside the 2021 Buick Enclave which was headed southbound. Law enforcement agencies determined that seatbelt was not in use at the time of the crash. According to her academic profile, Katie was a famous player in the 1998-99 Women’s Basketball. She currently serves as the Director of Mayville State’s Student Success and Disability Services.
Katie worked as the varsity boys basketball coach at May-Port-CG High School since 2009. Her previous accomplishments include being named to the all-state basketball team at Hope High School and earning honorable mention All-American status while playing for the University of North Dakota Sioux, where she played a key role in three national championship victories. The University of North Dakota Athletic Hall of Fame recently inducted Katie Richards and her colleagues from the 1998–1999 NCAA Women’s Basketball Division II Championship squad.
