Kevin D. Taylor II Death – The individual who was shot by a Waynesboro officer on Wednesday on Interstate-64 in Albemarle County has been identified by the police. In a press release from the Virginia State Police, it was revealed that Kevin D. Taylor II, a 29-year-old resident of Charlottesville, was the suspect in the Waynesboro shooting. Following a chase along I-64 from Waynesboro over Afton Mountain into Albemarle County, Taylor was shot and killed by Waynesboro Police. After the shooting, Taylor was taken to UVA Medical Center where he later succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday night.
The Waynesboro Police Chief has requested the state police to investigate the officer-involved shooting. Once the state police completes their investigation, the findings will be handed over to the Commonwealth’s Attorney for final review and adjudication, as stated in a release. As of earlier Thursday, Waynesboro officers who were involved in the shooting on I-64 have been placed on administrative leave until the investigation concludes.
According to the Waynesboro Police, they received an emergency call reporting a shooting in the 1000 block of Hopeman Parkway in the city shortly after 5 p.m. on Wednesday. While officers were en route to the scene, they spotted Taylor’s vehicle leaving. As they continued to respond to the shooting scene, other officers attempted to stop Taylor’s vehicle, but he did not comply, leading to a pursuit.
The pursuit continued into Albemarle County over Afton Mountain. At around 5:38 p.m., the pursuit came to an end when Taylor’s vehicle veered off the side of the eastbound lanes of I-64 at the 102 mile marker and crashed into the guardrail, according to the police.
During the encounter with the suspect, Taylor was shot, as confirmed by the police.
