Llewellyn Stewart Obituary – The victim of a fatal hit-and-run accident last Thursday in the West Atlantic City section of Egg Harbor Township has been identified as Llewellyn Stewart, 65, of Ventnor. Stewart was struck around 6:40 p.m. on Nov. 9 on the westbound side of the Black Horse Pike near Bayport Drive, police said. Traffic Thursday night was detoured for almost three hours as police investigated the scene. Investigators are still searching for the vehicle and driver of a larger car with front end damage that police described as “SUV-type” in a press release Tuesday.
Over the weekend police were working with the medical examiner’s office to identify the victim while investigating the incident based on debris left at the scene. The area of Bayport drive on the Black Horse Pike spans five lanes with two lanes in each direction and a shared left-turn lane in the center of the roadway. The road has street lighting, but police acknowledged in the press release that the roadway is dark in that area. The south side of the road includes a townhouse community while the north side has an Economy Inn. There are no crosswalks across that section of the Black Horse Pike.
The Egg Harbor Township Police department asked for any witnesses or anyone that has knowledge of the incident to come forward. They also tried to appeal to the motorist to turn him or herself in, adding that the road was dark at the time of the incident and saying authorities just want to “make things right for the family of Mr. Stewart.”
A representative from the police department did not immediately return a message with follow-up questions Tuesday evening.
