Maria Niz-Chilel Obituary – The 34-year-old woman who lost her life in a tragic accident involving a container truck near Georgetown on Thursday, Feb. 29 has been identified as Maria Niz-Chilel from Georgetown. Delaware State Police reported that Niz-Chilel was driving a 2008 Honda Civic when it collided with a 2020 Volvo VHD roll-off container truck at the intersection of Bull Pine Road and Shortly Road around 7:40 a.m. that day. Niz-Chilel failed to stop at a stop sign, leading to the fatal collision.
The impact caused the Volvo to veer off the road, while the Honda spun around and came to a stop in the eastbound lane of Shortly Road. Tragically, Niz-Chilel was pronounced dead at the scene, while her 29-year-old passenger was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the Volvo, a 59-year-old man from Millsboro, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to the hospital. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and the area remained closed for over six hours following the incident.
