Matthew Edward Healey, Death – Officials released new information about a man who was shot and killed by law enforcement in the parking lot of a nightclub early Friday morning. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office identified the person killed as Matthew Edward Healey, 57, of Greenville. Public records show he was a local dentist.
Lt. Ryan Flood said deputies with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Greenville Police Department were called to the Trophy Club on Airport Road around 12:40 a.m. over reports of a man with multiple weapons in the parking lot.
According to deputies, it was also reported that the man had been firing shots. Flood said when deputies and officers arrived, they encountered Healey and “one deputy discharged their firearm during the incident.”
ohnathan Bragg, with the Greenville Police Department, said a Greenville officer also fired a weapon. Flood said Healey was injured and taken to a hospital but died a short time later. No deputies or officers were injured in the incident. According to GCCO, Healey’s cause of death stemmed from a gunshot wound to the head.
“The incident in Greenville County was the 27th officer involved shooting in South Carolina in 2023. This is the 1st officer involved shooting for the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office this year. This is the 1st officer involved shooting for the Greenville Police Department this year.
“In 2022, there were 32 officer involved shootings in South Carolina. The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office had 1 officer involved shooting last year. The Greenville Police Department had 1st officer involved shooting last year,” said a press release from SLED.
The sheriff’s office has asked SLED to investigate the shooting, which is standard procedure.
