Rocky L. Dupin obituary, Death – Authorities have identified the Decatur resident who died in an officer-involved shooting on Monday. Rocky L. Dupin, 38, passed away at 5:44 p.m. in the operating room of Decatur Memorial Hospital, according to Macon County Coroner Michael Day. Decatur Police Chief Shane Brandel revealed during a press briefing that the shooting, involving two Decatur officers, took place while investigating an armed robbery at Decatur Discount convenience store on 898 W. Grand Ave. earlier that day.
The suspect, identified from store surveillance, was seen walking with two others around 3:50 p.m. on the 600 block of West Grand Avenue. Although initially complying with officers’ commands, the suspect stood up, defied orders to remain down, and allegedly brandished what appeared to be a firearm from his coat, prompting the officers to open fire.
The companions fled the scene, and while not labeled as robbery suspects, police are seeking to question them. Investigations are underway, led by the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation, with footage from squad car and body cams being reviewed. Autopsy results are pending, and findings will be reviewed by Macon County State’s Attorney Scott Rueter to determine the justification of deadly force usage.
