Wright joined Radio 1 in 1980 and hosted the Steve Wright in the Afternoon show from 1981 to 1993, pioneering the widely emulated “zoo format.” In 1996, he made the transition to Radio 2, where he hosted the afternoon slot for 24 years. However, in 2022, he was replaced as the station sought to attract a younger audience.
Despite the change, Wright continued as the host of Sunday Love Songs and took on the role of presenter for Pick of the Pops. In recognition of his contributions to radio, he was awarded an MBE in the 2024 New Year Honours list.
