Trump: Former President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he received a letter from Special Counsel Jack Smith saying he is under a grand jury investigation into an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Smith “sent a letter stating that I was the subject of a grand jury hearing on Jan. 6 (again Sunday night!),” Trump wrote on his own social media page, The Truth. wrote to
President Trump provided no evidence to support this claim. A spokeswoman for Smith’s office declined to comment. Later Tuesday, defense attorneys and federal prosecutors will appear for the first time before U.S. District Judge Eileen Cannon, who is on trial in Florida on charges of diversion of classified information and obstruction of justice.
Trump, the front-runner for the Republican nomination to run against Democratic President Joe Biden in the 2024 election, illegally withheld defense documents last month, undermining the government’s efforts after he leaves office in 2021 and threatening to ditch it. He was accused of conspiring to retrieve and sabotage.
Again, Smith directs the prosecution.
