Frank Dodd Obituary – Frank Dodd passed away on January 25 at the age of 96, surrounded by his family. He spent his early years at Ellerton Grange, near Newport, where he worked alongside his father George, and brother Peter to develop the prestigious Ellerton herd of pedigree Ayrshire cattle. Their hard work paid off as the herd achieved remarkable success, winning numerous prizes across the UK, including multiple Royal Show championships. In 1974, the Ellerton herd received the highest honor by winning the BOCM Silcock Gold trophy for the Best herd in Great Britain across all breeds.
Frank also held a position as a director at WH Slater Farms, a farming business established by his uncle, Will Slater, at Sheriffhales Manor near Shifnal. After Mr. Slater’s passing, Frank took charge of the business and oversaw the sale and consolidation of the three Ayrshire herds previously operated by Slater farms. Renowned for his expertise in judging dairy cattle, Frank was highly sought after as a judge at shows both nationally and internationally. He served on the council of the Ayrshire Cattle Society and had the privilege of being elected President in 1976.
As a firm believer in farmer cooperation, Frank dedicated 25 years as the Vice Chairman of Wrekin Farmers. He also held a position on the council of the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers and provided unwavering support to the Newport Show throughout his life, serving as President in 1977. Frank had four daughters with his first wife, Jean, who tragically passed away in 1962. Later, he married Heather, with whom he had two sons, and they shared 59 years of marriage.
