TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa Police reported that a suspect who brandished a gun at officers succumbed to his injuries after being shot by an officer at a park in north Tulsa. A line of Tulsa Police vehicles, with lights flashing and detectives collecting evidence, was seen at Wheeling Park near Apache and Lewis on Wednesday afternoon. Captain Richard Meulenberg of the Tulsa Police mentioned that the incident began with a call received around 3:30 p.m. from a different neighborhood near Pine and Lewis, approximately a mile away.
The caller reported that a man, known to him but unwelcome in his residence, refused to leave and had discharged shots into the air during a dispute. Meulenberg stated that upon officers’ arrival in the area to locate the suspect, he fled. It was swiftly discovered that the individual they were pursuing was a convicted felon. When asked about the officers’ thought process during the search, Meulenberg emphasized the unpredictability of such situations and the suspect’s blatant disregard for public safety. Following the shooting, crime scene investigators were dispatched to meticulously gather all evidence, including the firearm allegedly aimed at the officers.
The involved officer will be placed on standard paid leave pending the investigation. The suspect, transported to the hospital, passed away a few hours later. Authorities are in the process of notifying the deceased’s family and will disclose his identity subsequently.
