Khalil Alford Obituary – UNC Pembroke has confirmed the identity of the former student who tragically lost his life in a shooting at the Courtyard Apartments near campus. The victim, Khalil Alford, had plans to return to the university in the upcoming fall semester. Chancellor Robin Gary Cummings expressed deep sorrow over the untimely end to Alford’s opportunities and extended condolences to his family.
The university’s Student Government Association will be organizing a vigil in honor of Alford, demonstrating the support and unity of the campus community during this difficult time. Campus safety procedures were discussed in a meeting between the association’s president, executive team, and university leaders, emphasizing the importance of ongoing conversations to enhance safety measures.
Following reports of shots fired near the campus, students were promptly notified to shelter in place. Law enforcement authorities conducted a thorough investigation, which revealed shell casings at the Courtyard Apartments but no shooter. Tragically, Alford was found deceased at a separate location off campus.
The investigation, led by UNCP Police, RSCO, and the State Bureau of Investigation, is currently underway. Chancellor Cummings emphasized that this incident appears to be isolated. To provide support to the campus community, a mobile crisis unit will be available on campus on Friday.
