Maria Piovanett Obituary, Death
A 58-year-old woman named Maria Piovanetti from Flatbush lost her life two blocks away from her residence early Thursday morning when a dump truck hit her at a designated crosswalk, as per authorities. Maria Piovanetti was declared deceased at the scene around 6 a.m. after emergency responders discovered her at the intersection of Tilden Avenue and Bedford Avenue close to Kings Theatre, according to the police.
An initial inquiry by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad revealed that Piovanetti was walking from the northeast corner to the northwest corner on the marked crosswalk on Bedford Avenue when a 2014 Kenworth dump truck traveling southbound on Bedford Avenue struck her, the police stated.
The New York Daily News was the first to disclose that the dump truck made an illegal right turn at a red light while Piovanetti was crossing the street.
The driver of the dump truck, who was not identified immediately on Thursday, fled the scene after the incident, the police mentioned. As of Friday, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is still ongoing.
Numerous dump truck accidents involving Brooklyn pedestrians have been documented in recent months, resulting in fatalities or severe injuries in Midwood, Greenpoint, and Brooklyn Heights.
In October, a “beloved” Queens school crossing guard was also fatally hit by a dump truck, officials confirmed. In fact, the license plate observed in surveillance images of the Manolos Trucking dump truck in Thursday’s hit-and-run matched the plate numbers for the vehicle that struck down the crossing guard last year, as reported by the New York Daily News.
Although it is uncertain if Manolos Trucking faced any consequences for the fatal October incident, a safety evaluation conducted by federal officials post the crash did not assign the company a safety rating, found no major violations, and labeled the New Jersey-based trucking company as “non-ratable.”
A response from Manolos Trucking and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the government agency overseeing the safety rankings, was not received immediately.
