Pompeo DeRubeis Sr Obituary – Authorities have identified Pompeo DeRubeis Sr. as the 83-year-old man from Newton who passed away two days after being rescued from a house fire in the city last month. According to the Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan’s office, DeRubeis was one of two adults who were trapped inside the burning home on Lincoln Road. Newton firefighters responded to the incident and quickly located both individuals.
Unfortunately, DeRubeis and the other adult sustained serious injuries from the fire. DeRubeis was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Originally from San Donato Val di Comino, a village in Italy, DeRubeis had been a resident of Newton for over 60 years. He was known as Paul and had a passion for soccer, being a member of the Newton Soccer Club for many years. His obituary mentioned that he will be greatly missed by his children, sister Anna, and the entire Newton community.
A funeral was held for DeRubeis at Our Lady Help of Christians Parish in Newton. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the parish or to the DeRubeis Family Fund at The Village Bank in Newton. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Newton Fire Department, Newton Police Department, and Massachusetts State Police.
Preliminary findings suggest that the fire may have been caused by heating-related issues in the basement. As a precautionary measure, Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller, Newton Fire Chief Gregory Gentile, and Newton Police advise residents to keep flammable objects at least three feet away from space heaters.
