Alan Wendell Sanderson, Mark Hughes Obituary – The North Carolina Highway Patrol responded to a tragic incident in Davidson County on May 2 at 3 a.m. The collision occurred on I-85 South, just south of US-64. Reports indicate that a 1997 Ford truck was towing a trailer heading South on I-85. Simultaneously, a 2002 Ford pickup truck was also traveling in the same direction.
Unfortunately, the Ford pickup truck failed to decelerate and collided with the trailer of the 1997 Ford from behind. This impact caused the 1997 Ford truck to veer off the road to the left, overturn, and crash into a tree. The 2002 Ford pickup truck also veered off the road to the left and struck a tree.
The driver of the 1997 Ford pickup truck, Alan Wendell Sanderson, aged 68, and the passenger, Mark Hughes, aged 61, both lost their lives due to the injuries sustained in the crash. Both individuals were residents of Mooresville, North Carolina.
The driver of the 2002 Ford pickup truck, identified as Jerry Dan Surratt II, aged 48, was taken to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with severe injuries.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Surratt II has been charged with two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, driving while license revoked, and failure to reduce speed.
