Darrell Elkin Death – The Bloomington man who lost his life in a crash on southbound Interstate 55 near Clear Lake Avenue has been identified by the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office. Coroner Jim Allmon confirmed that Darrell Elkin, 73, was pronounced dead at 10 a.m. at HSHS St. John’s Hospital after being involved in a multi-vehicle collision near mile marker 98 along I-55 south.
According to the Illinois State Police, Elkin was driving a white 2015 Chevrolet truck when a 2022 Dodge Ram, driven by a 24-year-old from Renton, Washington, failed to reduce speed after a prior crash and collided with the rear of Elkin’s vehicle. This impact caused Elkin’s truck to veer off the roadway to the right and collide with a silver 2008 Chevrolet truck driven by a 70-year-old from Sherman, who was then forced into the same path as Elkin’s truck.
Coroner Allmon stated that an autopsy conducted on Wednesday revealed that Elkin’s cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries sustained during the collision. The driver of the Dodge Ram was cited for failing to reduce speed and causing the accident. Both he and the 70-year-old driver were hospitalized with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
The Illinois State Police and the coroner’s office are currently conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident.
