The sad news of the British actor’s demise was announced by his agent on Wednesday. In their statement, they expressed their deep sorrow and confirmed the passing of their friend and client, Michael Culver. They also mentioned that they had the privilege of representing him for the past decade and accompanying him to various prestigious “Star Wars” events in the United Kingdom and Europe. They expressed their heartfelt longing for him.
One of the most memorable moments for Culver’s agent was when they took him to a Celebration in Chicago in 2019. They recalled how he was left speechless upon witnessing a queue of nearly 200 people eagerly waiting to meet him.
According to his representatives, Culver passed away on February 27, and they had worked with him just three weeks prior during a signing event at his home. They highlighted his illustrious career spanning over 50 years, with notable roles in productions such as “Sherlock Holmes,” “A Passage to India,” “Secret Army,” and, of course, his unforgettable portrayal of Captain Needa in “The Empire Strikes Back,” where he met his demise at the hands of Darth Vader.
His agent further explained that Culver had largely retired from acting in the early 2000s to focus on his political activism. In addition to his screen work, he had a successful career on stage, particularly with the Dundee Repertory Theatre in Scotland, London’s West End, and the Kiln Theatre.
Furthermore, Culver made appearances in popular TV shows like “Emmerdale,” “Spooks,” and “Wallander.” He was also known for his strong support of anti-war protester Brian Haw during the Iraqi War. Culver regarded Haw as a deeply impressive human being, who unfortunately passed away in 2011. In 2023, Culver and actor Mark Rylance advocated for a statue of Haw to be erected outside the Imperial War Museum in south London. The statue was designed by Culver’s second wife, Amanda Ward.
The legacy of Michael Culver, both as an actor and an activist, will be remembered and cherished by his fans and colleagues alike.
