The Warwick Police Department has reported that a 33-year-old father fatally shot his 4-year-old son before taking his own life. The child has been identified as Liam Dempsey, while the man is named Seamus Dempsey, aged 33. Responding to a call regarding a potential homicide, officers arrived at the home on Thursday morning at approximately 8:30 a.m. The caller, Estefania Dempsey, 33, informed the police that her husband, Seamus, had used a handgun to shoot their biological son. Additionally, it was revealed that a 79-year-old mother-in-law, Ellen Dempsey, was present in the residence with the alleged perpetrator.
Fortunately, the mother-in-law was able to communicate with the officers and safely exit the home. Upon entering the residence, law enforcement discovered the bodies of Liam and Seamus, both having sustained gunshot wounds. WJAR has confirmed that the child attended Warwick Early Learning Center, and the school community is receiving support from comfort dogs provided by the police. Local residents expressed their concern when SWAT teams armed with rifles descended upon the area. One Warwick resident, Mary, stated that she was shocked and felt sympathy for the family, as they were known to be kind individuals.
Although Mary did not have a close relationship with the family, she described Liam as a sweet and gentle child. Another resident, Cathy Giguere, who lives nearby, found the news to be extremely shocking and emphasized the importance of checking on neighbors, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the various challenges people may be facing.
