Steven Olango Obituary – Late Saturday night, a tragic hit-and-run accident on Shelburne Road in South Burlington resulted in the death of a bicyclist. South Burlington Police were alerted to the incident at approximately 11:45 p.m. The incident occurred right in front of Pauline’s Cafe and Restaurant, according to authorities.
An eyewitness account revealed that the cyclist was struck by a yellow Mini Cooper, which callously continued driving north without stopping to assist the victim. The cyclist suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Pending notification of family members, the victim’s identity has not yet been disclosed.
Law enforcement officers successfully located the Mini Cooper at the Travel Lodge in South Burlington, approximately 1.3 miles away from the accident site. The driver of the vehicle was identified as 38-year-old Steven Olango, a resident of South Burlington.
Authorities have revealed that Olango has a criminal record in the State of Vermont, with 16 arrests and 11 convictions. In July 2023, Olango was arrested by Burlington Police for driving under the influence (DUI). At the time of the crash on Saturday, Olango’s license was suspended, and his vehicle registration had expired.
Olango is currently in custody with a bail set at $5,000. He will be facing charges of leaving the scene of a fatal accident and negligent operation.
In an unfortunate turn of events, while the South Burlington Police were present at the scene, a driver traveling southbound towards Burlington collided with a police cruiser around 1:15 a.m. on Sunday. Thankfully, no officers were inside the cruiser at the time of the collision. The cruiser sustained significant damage. The driver who struck the cruiser was found to be under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently processed for DUI. Formal criminal charges for the driver are pending the results of toxicology tests, as stated by the SBPD.
