“This was not an active shooter situation,” Ira Cronin a spokesperson for CSPD explained. “This appears to be an isolated incident.” Cronin explained the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will be handling any investigation inside the courthouse while CSPD will be handling the investigation into the reported shooting outside of the courthouse.
The suspect was identified as 29-year-old Shaquille Brown. Brown is charged with first-degree murder. The Colorado Springs Fire Department had about 20 people who responded to the scene. Two people were treated for “minor injuries,” but CSFD could not elaborate on what those injuries were.
The courthouse was closed for the rest of the day and reopened Friday morning. According to arrest papers, the suspect claims he feared for his life and that’s why he shot Winters.
